RESTORATION PERIOD CLOCK REPRESENTING THE ALLEGORY OF SCIENCE

An interesting ormolu clock with scholarly iconography on the theme of the arts and sciences. On the right, a woman wearing a chignon and curls, dressed in an Empire gown, leans against the central post, and on the left, an astronomical telescope rests on a column plated with thyrses and honeysuckles. The central terminal containing the dial, encircled by a garland of flowers, is decorated with a library topped by griffins and attributes of the arts: the lyre, the bust of Homer and the laurel wreath. It is surmounted by an armillary sphere whose ring is chiseled with symbols of the zodiac, framed by a wreath of flowers, a book and a square. The whole rests on a rectangular base adorned on the main side with fluted pilasters with goat heads, incense burners, rose garlands, a vase and horns of plenty. It is raised by four flattened ball-shaped feet. Wire movement in working order. Charles X period, Circa: 1820 Dim: W:30,5cm, D:11,5cm, H:42,5cm.
