Gilt bronze Napoleon III mantle clock of scalloped rococo shape. Before a trellis, in the middle of a composition dominated by acanthus leaves, shells, garlands of flowers and gadrooned leaves, appears Bacchus child and his goat, animal often seen in the Bacchic processions. Wearing a crown of vine leaves, he holds with one hand a cup, and a grape with the other one. The gilt bronze dial with twelve white enamel cartridges indicating the hours in Roman numerals is surmounted by a rich bouquet of flowers. Original movement in working condition. The clock is sold with its original gilt wood base.
With the Louis XV style, largely imitated in the second half of the nineteenth century, the bronze decoration takes its full extent. Some objects are only adorned with a stunning symphony of rococo patterns that intersect and overlap. Foliage and flowers are involved in this movement full of vitality and yet perfectly balanced.
