A NAPOLEON III ORMOLU-MOUNTED MARQUETRY CASKET, SIGNED BY TAHAN, CIRCA 1850. Inlaid burl, copper, tin, ebony and ebonized wood and gilt bronze ornamentation, oval shape, decorated with scrolls and foliage, the domed lid decorated with a monogram in the center, the mounts highlighted by fluted pilasters, the lock engraved Tahan EBENISTE OF S. M. EMPEROR PARIS. The inside is lined with blue velvet and the casket has its key. As indicated by the inscription engraved on the lock of the cabinet, Tahan was a cabinetmakers appointed by Napoleon III. Julliot wrote of him in The Chronicle of the Arts and the curiosity of December 1861: "It's one of those shops that cater for only the objects of choice, visit one of these manufacturers are ahead of fashion and they give the tone instead of being followers ".
