Resting on a Siena marble base and a patinated and chiseled bronze base. The Marly Horses are two sculpted groups representing rearing horses and their grooms. The original in Carrara marble, executed between 1743 and 1745 by Guillaume Coustou are now in the Louvre. They were commissioned by Louis XV to decorate the watering place located at the entrance of the castle of Marly. In 1794 they were transferred Place de la Concorde. In 1984, partly due to the fact that the parade of armored vehicles of July 14 was fragilizing them, they were replaced by concrete copies. Latest works of Guillaume Coustou, the Marly Horses had a great success (with reduced scale replicas) and announced the popularity of the Romantic artists for equestrian subjects, such as Théodore Géricault.
Circa :1820
Dim: W: 7,1 in - D: 4,3in - H: 10,2in.
Dim: L:18cm, P:11cm, H:26cm.

 <SKU>5215</SKU>

Early 19th century French cut crystal oval casket

Coffrets

Oval casket in cut crystal decorated with stylized draperies. Resting on a circular base of black marble. Cast of the nineteenth century from the original by Jean Baptiste Pigalle. Great French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was born in Paris in 1714. He works his art very young under the guidance of Robert Le Lorrain and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. Convinced that his art is the meaning of his life, he joined Italy in 1734 to perfect his technique. On his return, he began his "Mercury attaching his sandal" (1740), which helped him integrate teh "Beaux Arts". His reputation swells in the heart of the Parisian aristocracy. Madame de Pompadour took him under her wing at the same time as the orders flow. Juggling between the baroque and classical he produced the portrait of Diderot, Voltaire and then carried out the famous funeral monuments for the Maréchal de Saxe (Strasbourg, completed in 1776). Edouard Drouot was a French sculptor born in 1859 in Sommevoire died in 1945. He began his career as a genre painter, but soon devoted himself to sculpture. He left his native village young enough to study in Paris in the studio of Emile Thomas then Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912). The latter taught him how to carve academically corresponding to the taste of the time. Edouard Drouot emphasizes movement and expressiveness in his sculpted works. This virtuoso sculptor likes to stage his figures in poses to the precarious balance, which gives them an irresistible grace, as evidenced by its famous bronze sculpture of the Greek god Pan. Sculptures of Drouot have a penchant for fluidity, rhythm and curves of Art Nouveau. Strongly tilted forward, he looks up and protects itself by covering up his shield, attached to the left arm. The left leg is stretched back in line with the axis of the torso, only the toes resting on the ground. Right leg bent supports the body weight, the balance of the statue being provided by a prop in the shape of tree trunk attached to the top of the right thigh. This part is not included in the bronze model, but the tension of the body and muscles is highly similar to the original. The statue was discovered in a fragmentary state at Nettuno in 1609 in the ruins of the villa of Emperor Nero. It was immediately bought by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who had restored it in 1611: fourteen major pieces discovered are raised together, the restorer restores the missing right arm in the rear extension of the silhouette and the right ear and sex . The statue is then identified as a representation of Gladiator, she joined the rest of the collections of Cardinal Borghese at the casino. She became known throughout Europe as the "Borghese Gladiator", raising the number of copies and casts. The German scholar Winckelmann was the first to reject the identification of the statue as that of a Gladiator: indeed, the Greeks did not know the shows of gladiators. It then recognizes the Gladiator as a warrior. In 1807, Prince Camillo Borghese, beset by financial difficulties, decided to part with some of the family collections. He makes contact with English collectors, but his brother in law Napoleon 1st who ultimately acquired it, and entered the collections of the Louvre Museum.
Circa :1850
Dim: W: 6,3 in - D: 15,7in - H: 19,7in.
Dim: L:16cm, P:40cm, H:50cm.
Bibliography:

 <SKU>5155</SKU>

Sculpture in bronze of Milo of Croton after Edmé Dumont (1720-1775) cast by Susse Freres

Sculptures

Sculpture of Milo of Croton after Edmé Dumont (1720-1775) in

Bronze sculpture with dark green patina representing Milo of Croton opening a tree trunk, the legs of both sides of the body, tense muscles representing very well the intensity of effort. After Barye, he is considered the most famous animal sculptor. In 1838 he made his debut at the Salon where he quickly became popular. As Barye, Mene opened his own foundry to edit his works and those of his son Auguste Cain. He handles himself very carefully, casting and chiseling. He draws much inspiration from the animal repertory but also sculpts characters that are almost always associated with animals. This sculptor was first established Faubourg du Temple Street before moving to the Marais. The complete collection of works was published after his death and that of Cain in 1894 by the Susse foundry who bought the reproduction rights.
Circa :1890
Dim: W: 14,2 in - D: 6,7in - H: 13,8in.
Dim: L:36cm, P:17cm, H:35cm.
Bibliography:

 <SKU>5132</SKU>

A French 19th century gilded bronze mantel clock with lion heads

Pendules

A French 19th century gilded bronze mantel clock with lion heads

A French 19th century gilded bronze Louis XVI style mantel clock, casted with lion heads, festoons and leafs, enamel dial with Roman and Arab numerals.
Circa :1870
Dim: W: 9,4 in - D: 5,5in - H: 14,6in.
Dim: L:24cm, P:14cm, H:37cm.
Bibliography:

 <SKU>5131</SKU>

A gilt bronze inkstand with a mandolin on music paper

Encriers

A gilt bronze inkstand with a mandolin on music paper

A gilt bronze inkstand, representing a mandolin on music paper. The bronze is resting on a green marble base. It is marked at the base "after Germain Pilon". The Graces are considered minor deities as companions of Aphrodite. They are the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. In most cases, the three Graces personify beauty, gentleness and friendship. They served as a theme for many artists. Germain Pilon, born around 1528 in Paris and died in 1590 in the same city, is one of the most important sculptors of the French Renaissance. He was the sculptor of tombs of French kings of the sixteenth century. Son of the sculptor André Pilon, he learned from him, in shaping the clay and stone cutting. Appointed Controller of Stamps and Coins of the king, he also learned the art of carving and cast bronze. Of the two main sides, oval niches are decorated on one hand with two rabbits and the other three partridges. The box is richly decorated with branches and mulberry fruit and nut trees. All the decorative elements of this box are in high relief which gives much life to this casket. It is very representative of the Romantic movement, which in addition to its influence on the sculpture aimed on the portrait and the treatment of certain types of subjects, promotes the emergence of a particular genre: the animal sculpture. Animals fascinate the romantics; they represent the wildlife, the world of Nature, perfect mix between violence and sensibility. The animal sculptors are simply following a path already opened by the painters, first by the English, then by the Romantics of the 1820s in particular Gericault and Horace Vernet. The work of Antoine Louis Barye is at the peak of the genre, it brings in its wake many sculptors such as Alfred Barye, his son, Pierre-Jules and his son in law, Auguste Cain, the sculptor of the lions and tigers, which made the representation of these beasts his specialty. In spite of the reluctance of the academic society which considers the animal unworthy of the great art, the critics and the public speak very highly of this production, which clearly influenced the decorative arts. The animal sculptors following the example of Antoine-Louis Barye also produced many decorative objects. Many artworks appeared at that time, using the animal directory. Stork, turtle, lizards or frogs appear on the base or on the stems of the candelabra. Each of these animal representations reflects, in its way, the romantic impulse that runs throughout Europe.
Circa :1880
Dim: W: 10,2 in - D: 4,7in - H: 7,5in.
Dim: L:26cm, P:12cm, H:19cm.
Bibliography: - Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Barye : catalogue raisonnée des sculptures, éd. It is the omnipresence of rococo patterns which blend flora and fauna. This Napoleon III cartel reproduces the finesse of the carving of the pieces in bronze under the reign of Louis XV as long as its rococo ornamental repertoire.
Circa :1870
Dim: W: 8,3 in - D: 2,4in - H: 14,6in.
Dim: L:21cm, P:6cm, H:37cm.
Bibliography:

2,000€

 <SKU>4931</SKU>

Delhi vase in blue Sevres porcelain

Porcelaine

Delhi vase in blue Sevres porcelain

An original vase, Delhi model , in blue porcelain by the Sevres manufactory. In the central part a carved and finely chiseled stem is framed by three circular rings, richly decorated with flowers. It should be noted that some glasses are not the original ones. The development of the French crystal comes from the 19th century. It was produced in abundance, thanks to the advances in chemistry and machinery. Even though it spreads abundantly and generously, it kept on being a luxury. In the 19th century the production of French crystal is in the hands of four crystal glassworks:The Royal Glassware of St. Louis, founded in 1767 at Muntzthal, was the first one to discover, by sending observers in England, the secrets of the crystal. Since then, St. Louis specialized itself in the luxury glassware and held an interest for the opal crystal. The name of Baccarat crystal represents the production of three factories. The first one, Voneche was founded in 1778 near Liège, and was bought in 1802 by Aimé-Gabriel d'Artigues, nephew of the director of St. Louis. When the treaties of 1815 took away Voneche of the French territory, Artigues bought the St. Anne glassware near Baccarat. Then in 1822 the Baccarat crystal glassware absorbed Trelon in the north which produced at that time only window glass. The man who gave rise to the Baccarat crystals was a scholar, a glass technician, as well as a very good administrator: J-B Toussaint. Until his death in 1858, he gave a hard life to the competition in France and abroad.Among those competitors, the factory at Le Creusot benefited of the government support in order to find the secret of the colored crystals from England. The factory at Le Creusot, also called Montcenis was a resurgence of the Queen manufacture funded in Sèvres in 1783 by Lambert and Boyer. Following a mismanagement of the factory, the government decided in 1785 the transfer of the factory at Le Creusot. Despite some successes including the yellow and turquoise opal crystal, le Creusot fell into financial difficulties and in 1832. Baccarat and St. Louis came together, bought the factory and switch off the ovens. Two other factories were founded under the Restauration: Choisy-le-Roi in 1821 and Bercy in 1827. In 1832, a commercial agreement between Baccarat and St. Louis was extended to the manufactures of Choisy-le-Roi and Bercy, which had shown their qualities thanks to an excellent production.
Circa :1820
Dim: W: 6,3 in - D: 4,7in - H: 3,9in.
Dim: L:16cm, P:12cm, H:10cm.
Bibliography:

3,100€

 <SKU>4921</SKU>

Pair of porcelain and ormolu candelabra in the manner of Meissen

Flambeaux

Pair of porcelain and ormolu candelabra in the manner of Meissen

A very nice quality pair of Louis XV style candelabra decorated with two young children in porcelain in the manner of Meissen.
