Subject in bronze with brown patina representing Pandora, coiffed and draped in the antique style, holding the box offered by Zeus, from which, according to legend, all the evils of mankind escaped. Signed on the base: "Ene AIZELIN Fit 1864" and "F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR". Stamped "Réduction mécanique A. Collas Breveté". Public exhibition label F. Barbedienne 30, Boulevard Poissonnière, Paris. Numbered 4486. The sculpture is presented on its original velvet base with label. 

Eugène Antoine Aizelin (1821-1902) was a pupil of Ramey and Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts, and made his Salon debut in 1852 with a plaster "Sapho", which he exhibited in bronze the following year. His principal works include: "Nissya au bain" (3rd medal, Salon de 1859), same subject in marble (2nd medal, Salon de 1861), "Psyché", 1863 (Musée de Quimper), "L'Enfant et le Sablier", 1864, "Une Suppliante", 1865 (Musée de Montpellier), "Orphée descendant aux enfers", 1870 (Musée de Reims), "L'Idylle" (Cour du Louvre), "La Sortie de l'église", 1875, "Amazone vaincue", 1876, "Pandore", "La Pastorale", 1876, "Marguerite", 1884, "Agar et Ismael", 1888 (Musée du Luxembourg), "Judith" (Musée du Luxembourg), "Saint Grégoire et Saint Cyrille" (Trinité), "Sainte Geneviève et un évêque" (Saint-Roch), "Bailly et Madame de Sévigné" (Hôtel de Ville). He was awarded a 2nd medal in 1878 and a gold medal in 1889. Aizelin was named Officer of the Legion of Honor. 19th century, Circa: 1870
