Literature

As with many sculptors who began their careers in the 1830s, Pierre-Jules Mène (1810-1879) started studying art with his father, Dominique Mène (1775-1846), a craftsman who worked with copper. Later he worked with a wood sculptor, René Compaire. He began earning his living by modeling various subjects for porcelain manufacturers. Afterward, animal figures became his specialty. After 1845, his production was dominated by hunting scenes, thanks to a renewed interest in hunting in aristocratic circles. The success of his sculptures coincided with this trend during the Second Empire. Mène participated in the Paris Salon from 1838 to 1879. He earned a first class medal in 1852, a third class medal at the 1855 World Fair and the Legion of Honor in 1861.
