The original rocking chair was a simple chair with legs to which a curved piece of wood was added to allow it to rock back and forth. It is one of those ingenious innovations that changed the history of furniture. In the most original creations, such as the Thonet rocking chair, the traditional four legs disappeared in favour of interlacing curved wood that combined solidity and lightness, stability and tilting, as well as a pure Art Nouveau aesthetic. It was in 1830 that Michael Thonet (1796-1871), a master cabinetmaker and furniture designer of Viennese origin, began to exploit the techniques of bending wood by steaming, adapting the know-how of coopers and shipbuilders for his furniture. His creations quickly became very successful, particularly with breweries, which equipped themselves with chairs, including the famous N°14 chair, of which several million were produced. Today, Thonet manufactures classics in bentwood and tubular steel as well as many new products designed by renowned architects and designers such as Stefan Diez, Naoto Fukasawa, Hadi Teherani, Delphin Design, James Irvine...
