Large Art Nouveau white marble bust featuring Cosette, the heroine of Victor Hugo's novel "Les Misérables" (1862). She wears the Phrygian cap - symbol of freedom, which links her cause to that of the French nation. Cosette is depicted as a beautiful, young girl, whose proud and willful attitude is similar to Marianne's, symbolic figure of the French Republic and icon of freedom. The bust bears the inscription "COSETTE" on the base. Signed: "A Bertier".
