Marble and gilt bronze Empire style writing case. It is composed of two containers with removable glass cups. The lids are decorated with foliage and braids. In the centre, there is a winged sphinx in gilt bronze wearing a nemes, an Egyptian headdress. The whole rests on a rectangular green marble base with four circular feet and a hollowed-out penholder. The marble is decorated with a mask representing Mercury with his winged petascus. This refers to the function of the object, Mercury being the god of messengers.

This inkwell represents the taste for polychromy under Napoleon III during the Second Empire
