Set of three gouaches in Pompeian style depicting three of the nine Muses of Greek mythology: Clio, Melpomene and Thalia. The Muses were beautiful young women who were the embodiments of science, literature, and the arts. Clio was the Muse of history. She is wearing a laurel crown and carries an open scroll. Sitting on a throne, she has at her feet a basket with several scrolls. In the lower part, an allegory of history with warrior attributes.
Melpomene is the Muse of tragedy. She is depicted with a tragic mask in one hand and the scepter in the other. Melpomene stands on a pedestal marked in Greek "ΜΕΛΠΟΜΕΝΗ ΤΡΑΓΩΔΙΑΝ" (Melpomene - Tragodian). In the lower part, swans symbolize an allegory of tragedy.
Thalia is the Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. She is portrayed as a young woman with a joyous air wearing a crown of ivy, and carrying a comic mask in her hand. On her pedestal there is the inscription "ΘΑΛΕΙΑ ΚΩΜΟΛΙΑΝ" (Thaleia - Komodian). The allegorical scene illustrates the comedy, with two birds and musical instruments.
