Pair of black marble obelisks decorated with gilded hieroglyphs and heads of pharaohs wearing bronze nemeses. They stand on architectural bases with red marble fillets and four bronze feet.

The 19th century, known as the century of"Egyptomania", was marked by Western fascination with the history and culture of pharaonic Egypt. From Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt in 1798, to the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869, the country aroused curiosity. Archaeological discoveries fascinated scientists and bewitched artists and collectors. The Empire style was characterized by Egyptomania.
