Review

Restauration clock with peddler crafted of gilt bronze featuring a winged Cupid holding a thyrse and carrying on his back the dial. His enameled eyes contrast with the gold patina of his skin. The clocks depicting small trades such as sailor, gardener or, as here, travelling merchant carrying his goods, were popular under the Empire and Restoration, and marked the beginning of the Romantic period. Our peddler is wearing a garland of grapevines and sandals. Behind him, there is a basket filled with fruits. The clock is set upon an oval base decorated with vine branches, above four claw feet.

Circa :1820
Dim: W: 11 in - D: 5,5in - H: 15,4in.
Dim: L:28cm, P:14cm, H:39cm.
