Review of Marco LM on Tripod bronze inkwell decorated with fantastic animals
|Tripod bronze inkwell decorated with fantastic animals|
Early 19th century bronze inkwell richly decorated with fantastic animals and foliage.
The vase which houses an inkpot, rests on three chimera-shaped feet. The stopper is topped by a putto forming the plug. This decoration is inspired by the medieval bestiary which decorated the illuminated manuscripts and the Gothic cathedrals. The group is set on a tripod base above three scrolled feet.
"Gothic" taste was the first reaction to the ubiquitous antique style defined by Percier and Fontaine in the early nineteenth century. Everyday objects from the modest to the most luxurious ones as clocks, inkwells and candlesticks are decorated with various patterns inspired by fenestration, gables columns and fashions evoking the styles of the past. The interiors are characterized then by a nostalgic fascination for the medieval period. This retrospective game applied to the habitat and decorative objects, thanks to the de Berry Duchess, eager to distinguish herself from traditional tastes of the court, announces the great historicized stages of the second half of the century.
