Sculpture of a young woman in white marble called "meditative young woman", signed Pugi. Dressed in a loose cloak with embroidery falling from her right shoulder, the young woman is seated on a rock covered with a drape. She is holding wheat in her left hand while her right hand is resting under her chin. She looks absently to her left. Her hair is tied in a turban and her feet are bare. The sculpture has a circular base. The marble is signed under the base.

 

Guglielmo Pugi (1850-1915) was an Italian sculptor who specialized in the direct carving of Carrara marble for export. He made female figures in the taste of Art Nouveau and is known for a bust of King Umberto I in Fiesole, a small town on the outskirts of Florence.
