Review

Beautiful violin shaped cartel in green lacquered oak and its base. It is richly decorated with gilded rocaille bronzes in the form of acanthus, flowers and foliage. A window in the front highlights the openwork bronze elements. The circular ormolu dial is finely chiseled with 25 enamelled cartouches indicating the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals in increments of five. The signature "Gudin à Paris" is engraved on the movement at the back. The key is signed "Julliet".

 

Jacques-Jérôme Gudin was one of the most important watchmakers during the reign of Louis XV. He became a master in 1750 and settled in the Quai des Orfèvres in Paris. He worked for Lazare Duvaux, merchant of Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour, his favorite. ^m:

Condition Report
Time wear to the gilding. Movement revised and in working order. Some restauration to the lacquer.
